The condition of the bead is outstanding — preserved with a rare, time-honored surface patina. Its texture is lustrous and fine, with natural weathering marks of great authenticity.

According to legend: A celestial dog once angered the Jade Emperor and was cast down to earth. Harboring resentment toward Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit of the Moon Palace, it noticed the moon shining brightly in the sky each night. Seeking revenge, the dog secretly climbed up to the heavens and swallowed the moon in one bite, plunging the human world into darkness. Alarmed, people lit torches, beat drums, and made loud noises. Frightened, the celestial dog spat out the moon, restoring its light.

This myth is a traditional folk tale; scientifically, the phenomenon is understood as a lunar eclipse.
